I’m Andrei “DRE” Ausch, a professional sketch card artist and illustrator who has been creating artwork for the entertainment and collectibles industry since 2016. Marvel characters have been a major part of my work, giving me the opportunity to illustrate heroes, villains and other characters from across the Marvel universe.
Much of my professional Marvel artwork has been created for officially licensed trading card releases from Upper Deck. Unlike printed trading cards, sketch cards are miniature pieces of original artwork created directly on official card stock. Each card is individually drawn or painted by the artist and inserted into trading card products as a collectible original.
Working on a 2.5 by 3.5 inch surface presents a unique challenge. My goal is to make each Marvel sketch card feel like a complete illustration despite the small format, with careful attention to composition, lighting, color and character.
I primarily work in acrylic paint, often building up thin layers of color to create depth, contrast and detail. Depending on the piece, I may also incorporate colored pencil, airbrush or ink.
One of the things I enjoy most about creating Marvel art is the variety of characters and visual possibilities. From iconic heroes and villains to darker characters such as Venom, every subject provides an opportunity to experiment with pose, expression, lighting and color while developing my own interpretation of the character.
