Watch my process for creating this X-23 sketch card commission, an Artist Proof (AP) from Upper Deck’s 2018 Black Panther trading card set. This time-lapse follows the artwork from the transferred sketch through the final color, ink, and finishing details.
I started the X-23 artwork with a 5″ × 7″ pencil sketch, working at twice the size of the final trading card. After sending the initial drawing to the collector for approval, I scanned the artwork into Photoshop, made a few adjustments to the composition, and scaled it down to the standard 2.5″ × 3.5″ sketch card size.
I then printed the resized drawing onto copy paper and loosely transferred the artwork to the card stock using my home made carbon transfer. That’s where the video begins. From there, I refined the linework before moving into color, ink, shading, and final details.
For this Marvel sketch card, I used a Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Colour Paint Field Box Set, black and white Prismacolor pencils, and a fine liner.
This AP comes from the 2018 Upper Deck Black Panther set, which I had the opportunity to contribute artwork to as a sketch card artist. Sketch card commissions like this are a great opportunity to experiment with techniques and refine my illustration process. I find something new to learn with every card I create, and each one helps me continue developing my skills as an artist.
