I had the opportunity to create original sketch card artwork for the 2018 Upper Deck Black Panther Movie Sketch Cards collection, based on Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. As an artist, projects like this give me the chance to put my own style and interpretation into characters from the Marvel universe while working within the unique format of collectible trading cards.
For this Upper Deck release, I created hand-drawn Black Panther sketch cards inspired by the characters and visual world of Wakanda. Each sketch card is an original piece of artwork, not a reproduction, making every card I created a one-of-a-kind collectible.
Working on sketch cards presents an interesting challenge because there’s a limited amount of space to capture a character’s personality, recognizable features, and overall presence. I approach each card as a miniature piece of original art, focusing on composition, detail, line work, and the elements that make the character immediately recognizable.
Being able to contribute artwork to an officially licensed Upper Deck Black Panther trading card set was a great opportunity to combine my interest in illustration with characters from the Marvel universe.
The 2018 Upper Deck Black Panther Movie Sketch Cards are part of my larger portfolio of sketch card, trading card, comic, and entertainment artwork. Over the years, I’ve worked on a variety of projects that have allowed me to illustrate established characters while bringing my own artistic approach to each piece.
