I’m Andrei “DRE” Ausch, a professional sketch card artist, illustrator and acrylic painter working in the entertainment and collectibles industry. Since 2016, I’ve contributed artwork to licensed projects featuring properties from DC and Warner Bros., alongside my work for other major entertainment brands.
Sketch cards combine two things I enjoy: character illustration and the challenge of creating finished artwork on a very small surface. A standard sketch card measures only 2.5 by 3.5 inches, so composition and visual impact become especially important.
Each sketch card is an individual piece of original artwork rather than a reproduction of a larger painting. Working at this scale requires balancing detail with readability while still capturing the personality and recognizable characteristics of each subject.
Acrylic paint is my primary medium for sketch card art. I often work with thin layers of paint, gradually developing values, color, lighting and details. I also use colored pencil, airbrush and ink when they complement the piece.
My approach is rooted in realism while still retaining the qualities of comic book and character illustration. I’m continually refining the way I work, experimenting with different techniques and looking for ways to make each new piece stronger than the last.
The DC universe offers a broad range of heroes, villains and visual styles to explore. Creating artwork based on established characters means finding a balance between staying true to the character and bringing something of my own artistic approach to the finished piece.
That challenge is a large part of what makes licensed sketch card art interesting to me. Even when illustrating a familiar character, changes in composition, expression, lighting and technique can make every card unique.
